Who Needs This 8 Hour Annual Course?

This annual training is mandatory for all security personnel who maintain an armed security guard license in New York City. Along with the annual in-service training required for both unarmed and armed guards, this training ensures that licensed armed guards meet all armed security guard requirements for their profession. Armed guards must complete this annual course within the first 12 months after completing their 47 hour firearms training course, as well as once a year thereafter.

What Topics Does This Course Cover?

While the 8 hour annual in-service training for all guards covers important topics related to the security guard’s role, duties, and legal ethics and standards, this course is specifically designed to update firearms training and certification. As a result, it includes instruction that ensures that all armed security guards in the city remain knowledgeable and proficient in the safe and proper use of their licensed firearms. The course includes:

  • Classroom time devoted to providing refresher instruction on the appropriate standards for Use of Force
  • Five house of firearm range instruction
  • A written exam covering New York Penal Law 35, Use of Force/ Deadly Physical Force
