This course provides real-world on-the-job instruction that introduces candidates to guard duties and responsibilities in an actual work site. Candidates are required to complete the training no more than 90 days after securing a job as a security guard.

Candidates must obtain a legal New York Pistol Permit and be registered as a security guard to take this course. Once the course is completed, candidates receive a certificate that they submit when applying for an upgraded armed guard registration.

What do I need to train to be an armed security guard in New York?

Before you can train to become an armed security guard in New York City, you will need to ensure that you have completed the process to obtain your legal handgun permit. ISS provides handgun consulting that can assist you in navigating New York’s complex gun control regulations.

Can I still be a security guard if I have a criminal conviction?

That depends. Those questions are better addressed to state officials at the Department of State, Division of Licensing Services. You can find more answers here or call their offices for clarification.

What courses are required to be a security guard in New York?

Both unarmed and armed guards must complete the 8 Hour Pre-Assignment and 16 Hour On-the-Job-Training courses to obtain their licenses. To maintain registration, they must also complete and 8 Hour Annual In-Service Training course once during each calendar year – in much the same way that other professionals are required to take continuing education courses.

Armed guards need to also take a 47 Hour Firearms Training Course to ensure that they are familiar with the proper use of force and proficient with their firearms. They are also required to take an additional annual course, the 8 Hour Annual Firearms Training course.
