Required 47 Hour Firearms Course for Armed NYC Security Guards

To participate in the course, students must have a valid New York security guard registration and handgun license in accordance with New York Penal Law. Certification is provided to all students who successfully complete the course by passing an examination covering Article 35 and qualifying with a handgun.

Who Needs This 47 Hour Security Guard Training?

These security classes are required for anyone who wants to become an armed security guard. The course is intended to ensure that licensed armed guards have a firm foundation of knowledge about New York statutes governing the use of force and deadly physical force, in accordance with NYS Penal Law Article 35. In addition, students receive firearms instruction and qualification to ensure proficiency with their licensed handguns. The course consists of 7 hours of classroom instruction and a total of 40 hours of range instruction and handgun qualification.

What Topics Does This Course Cover?

This 47 hour course of instruction is separated into both classroom and firearms range instruction, testing, and qualification. The course includes:

  • 7 total hours of classroom instruction covering Use of Force and Deadly Physical Force, to ensure that candidates understand the controlling New York penal law
  • 40 hours of instruction, practice, and testing on the firearms range, to ensure that prospective security guards are proficient in the safe use of their pistols
  • A written exam covering New York Penal Law 35, Use of Force/ Deadly Physical Force
  • Handgun qualification on the firearms range, certifying pistol proficiency

This course only needs to be completed one time and is thereafter refreshed with annual 8 hour firearms instruction and testing to maintain license certification.
