Who Needs This NYC Security Guard License Training?

The 16 hour security guard training course is mandatory for both unarmed and armed security guards. To qualify for the course, students must have already successfully completed their 8 hour pre-assignment training course. Armed guards must have also completed the 47 hour firearms training course before they can take this on-the-job training. In addition, students must first secure employment as a security guard, since the course is focused on training for a real-world work environment.

What Topics Does This Course Cover?

The course covers many of the same topics explored in the 8 hour pre-assessment course but does so using a hands-on approach. As a result, it goes beyond the theoretical approach of the classroom and helps student learn to apply that knowledge in a practical, real-world environment. Topics covered include:

  • The security guard’s role and responsibilities
  • Private security’s legal powers and limitations on that power
  • Standards for response in emergency situations
  • Standards for access control
  • Proper public relations and communications procedures and techniques
  • Security guard ethics and code of conduct
  • Incident command systems
  • Terrorism
  • Report-writing and incident documentation
  • Review of coursework and exam. Students are required to pass the examination with a score of at least 70% to obtain required certification.
Security guard training in New York City is intense, but necessary to ensure that every licensed guard has the knowledge and expertise needed to properly safeguard lives and property. Still, it can be challenging to know who to turn to when you need competent and effective training to prepare you for your new career in the security guard industry.

These requirements are designed to provide standardization for the industry and ensure that every trained guard is properly equipped to manage his or her duties and responsibilities.

What do I get for completing the course?

Upon successfully completing any relevant course, you will receive an officially approved Certificate of Completion that will satisfy state registration and licensing requirements.

How soon can I start employment as a security guard?

Candidates can begin employment as an unarmed security guard as soon as they complete the 8 Hour Pre-Assignment course and receive their completion certificate, provided they have submitted a Guard Application to the state of New York and been properly fingerprinted. Obtaining employment is a necessary next step in the training process, and a prerequisite for participation in the 16 Hour On-the-Job training program.

What do I need to train to be an armed security guard in New York?

Before you can train to become an armed security guard in New York City, you will need to ensure that you have completed the process to obtain your legal handgun permit. ISS provides handgun consulting that can assist you in navigating New York’s complex gun control regulations.

Can I still be a security guard if I have a criminal conviction?

That depends. Those questions are better addressed to state officials at the Department of State, Division of Licensing Services. You can find more answers here or call their offices for clarification.

What courses are required to be a security guard in New York?

Both unarmed and armed guards must complete the 8 Hour Pre-Assignment and 16 Hour On-the-Job-Training courses to obtain their licenses. To maintain registration, they must also complete and 8 Hour Annual In-Service Training course once during each calendar year – in much the same way that other professionals are required to take continuing education courses.

Armed guards need to also take a 47 Hour Firearms Training Course to ensure that they are familiar with the proper use of force and proficient with their firearms. They are also required to take an additional annual course, the 8 Hour Annual Firearms Training course.
